I don't know what his personal beliefs were, but I understand he was 'a believer'. He seemed to play it very safe, very prim and proper and no doubt skilled in 'political arts'. I guess it was remarkable that he stayed as PM for so long, but a large part of that was Peter Costello, who I don't think was politically ambitious to the point where he would 'put the knife in' to John Howard.
