After being an AWS customer for the last 4 years, I have anxiously awaited an announcement for an Australian based AWS data centre for a long time!
Next week, Werner Vogels, the CTO of Amazon will unveil two new Sydney data centre locations based out of Equinux’s facilities.
This is a great day for Australian hosting providers, application development firms and the corporate and public sectors desiring to leverage Amazons ecosystem down under.
The reason why I have looked forward to an Australian EC2 instance is to host websites, but there are much bigger implications for content providers to host content at an AWS location here in Australia. It means that streaming video and other rich media can be streamed domestically to Sydneys AWS facility. which means a better image quality and a better viewing experience for end users.
Amazon AWS has had a cloudfront node in Sydney since June, so it’s wonderful to see their service rounded out to include all the cloud functionality that their PaaS and IaaS services have to offer.
I plan to move my Australian hosting clients to the Sydney datacenter as soon as possible.
It will involve quite a bit of work, but it will be worth it!
